February News letter 2016

1914395_1122873181086971_7324139640956436156_nThe last month has again been rather frustrating with the wind stopping boats getting out most weekends. The once reliable XC Weather site seems to be all over the place making it even harder to find a window in the weather.

Three boats did manage to sneak out for a short trip over high water on 17th January for a winner takes all cod bash. Lucky Strike failed on the cod but had some thornies, straps, whiting and dogs. Four Buoys faired similar but Steve Saxby found 1 codling of just over 5lb. Pete Nicholson and Mark Bowden had a better time of it with 9 codling, the biggest of 9lb 4oz going to Pete with rays, whiting, dogs and straps making up the rest of their catch. If boats can get out then there are enough fish to make it worthwhile. Hopefully we will have a fresh run of spring codling and then the bass will be just behind them so prospects are looking ok.

Fish of the month for January was won by Pete Nicholson with his cod of 9lb 4oz.

February 21st will be a re-run of our Presidents cup and in March we have the Wilf Dunstone Trophy on the 6th and the Vicoue Trophy on the 20th so hopefully this wind will start to ease and we all get to fish a competition.

Our next club meeting is on Thursday 17th March at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

January Newsletter 2016

As I write this report there is a glimmer of hope that the wind is going to drop enough this weekend to actually get the boat out! Only one boat has managed to get out since my last report and that was on New Years day. Pete Nicholson and Mark Bowden braved some sloppy seas and were rewarded with thornies and straps to low doubles, some whiting and a cod to Pete of 6lb 15oz. A few club members have resorted to hitting the beach to get their fishing fix with lots of codlets, thornies and straps but very few decent sized cod, though i’m sure if we can get the boats out into some deeper water then a few cod will be found.

With no boats getting out for the whole of December fish of the month went unclaimed, hopefully this won’t be repeated again this year.

Our next comp is The Fred Peters Trophy on Sunday 7th February and our next club meeting is on Thursday 18th February at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

Well what a disappointment the last month has been. There seems to be no let up in this wind with  only the briefest of windows, which never seem to coincide with free time!

There hasn’t been a single club boat launch from Burnham since my last report which is very frustrating as the cod fishing was just starting to get in to full swing in the bay.

With 2 competitions cancelled fish of the month for November was won again by Andy Georgiou with a cod of 8lb 4oz on November 1st .

After an invitation from Portishead Small Boats club a couple of Burnham boats towed up there to fish in their cod comp. There were a number of cod caught with new BBOSAA member Zeke Grant  taking 1st place with a cod of 7lb 5 ½ oz. Zeke also landed and released a cracking thornback of 15lb.

November was also the month for our AGM with only a couple of changes to the committee, standing down were Dave Teather and Craig Willis, many thanks guys for your effort over the years. Alex Wharton has taken on the roles of Vice chairman and Safety officer and I am the new Competition secretary.

Our first comp for 2016 is on Sunday 10th Jan and our first club meeting is on Thursday 21st Jan at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

Sunday 17th January

It had been a very long time since we had last been out on Four Buoys so we were eager to go out and look for a few cod.

With reports of big fish being caught lower down channel we were optimistic bunch of anglers!

And with 3 boats out on the day it was agreed to hold a cod comp between us, at £5 a head winner takes all, to add a bit of spice to the day.

Craig Willis & Terry Garrett on Lucky Strike and Mark Bowden & Pete Nicholson on Vicoue had already launched and were fishing by the time we managed to get Four Buoys in the water. We set off to a sand-coral bank near Hinkley and passed Vicoue who were fishing in the river on our way out.

Lucky strike was already on the bank when we got there but, there is plenty of room and we were soon anchored up and fishing. It was slow going on both boats with just a few rays showing but Pete was starting to find a few cod, Mark however was struggling.

The phone kept ringing as Pete was now finding a steady stream of fish and was kindly keeping us informed!!

Mark was still codless and we all felt a little sorry for him as we could imagine the grief he was getting from Pete!

Pete must have felt sorry for him in the end as he repositioned the boat and let Mark catch a couple.

After a Chinese Parliament on Four Buoys we decided to move inshore to Hinkley itself, I was out voted 3 to 1 having suggested we go and try our luck in the river.

After 10 minutes fishing on our new mark I had a 5lbs 4ozs cod, so what do I know!

We got weeded out in the end so moved right into the river for the last hour or so but struggled again to find fish.

Lucky Strike had a tough day as well, and failed to find any cod, but the boys on Vicoue ended the day with 9 codling, 7 for Pete up to 9lbs 4ozs which took the money and 2 for Mark plus some whiting and rays.
