November’s News Letter 2017

By Richard Saxby

When I started to write this months report there had not been any activity out of Burnham due to the constant NW winds although 1 boat had sneaked a trip out of Portishead and found a few codling.

With the clocks going back and nights drawing in the next 3 months or so are going to be all about the cod.

Will they be around in good numbers or are we going to have to settle for the odd one here and there.

Early indications from the top end of the channel look promising but we’ve had these false dawns before.

We also had our AGM which went well and all committee members were persuaded to stand again and well supported by our great members.

Thankfully just before the deadline the wind has dropped allowing boats to get out and wet their lines.

Friday 17th Four Buoys made it out and steamed down towards Minehead trying a couple of new marks.

We didn’t find any cod but Stephen Saxby showed us how it’s done with a couple of firsts for the boat, a haddock of 1-15 and a spur of exactly 10lb.

Sunday 19th we held the Wilf Dunstone Trophy which was a cod comp ( risky I know!!) for the first three places and pools was best specimen.

Light winds gave for a very enjoyable day afloat and all 20 anglers caught plenty of fish with 7 cod making it back to the scales.

1St was Nigel Devey with a cod of 9lb closely followed with a tie for second with cod of 8lb 13oz for Andy Georgiou and Craig Willis.

Aaron Devey won the pools with an lsd of 2lb 11oz and 90%.

Fish of the month for October sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was a lsd of 1lb 13oz and 60% for Dave Tether.

The next club competition is our Xmas comp on Sunday 17th December and will also be another attempt at the Thornback Trophy.

Our next club meeting is on Thursday 21st December and is our Xmas social at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.
