A message form fish recorder Mark Bowden.

As new year is upon us here’s a quick reminder of the changes to the rules for the Labbe Trophy.

All fish caught on a club boat which has launched at Burnham need to be photographed and then sent to Kelly (07824640289) or myself.

There are no minimum sizes, everything counts.

If it comes down to a tie at the end of the year then we will go on the percentages of the fish that have been weighed on club scales.

This only applies for this trophy.

Also the smoothound formula has been changed slightly from 600 to 650 .

If you catch a specimen smoothly don’t forget to weigh it as we can currently only make conservation claims if they are weighed afloat.

Conservation awards now recieve 3pts towards the Porthcawl Trophy, so this may make all the difference if its a close competition.

Happy New year year to all, enjoy your celebrations.

Hope 2018 bring us lots of fish!

December’s News Letter 2017

By Richard Saxby

As I sit here 5 days before Xmas the temperatures are rising up to a balmy 11 degrees and hopefully the winds are going to be more favourable in the new year.

It has been a real struggle to get afloat for the last few months making it hard to find any pattern to the fishing.

The thornbacks have been consistent, doggies at times a pest and congers increasing but the cod and whiting have been sporadic in the bay.

The smoothound fishing this year was excellent with some real donkeys landed and hopefully next year will be even better.

We had a fair number of bass in the spring up to 7lb which were all returned for us to catch again next year when bigger (and return them again)!!!!

Unfortunately our Xmas comp on 13th was cancelled due to a poor forecast but undeterred Ultra White took a chance and steamed down to Watchet.

Plenty of fish for the crew but no sizeable cod were landed though they were kept busy with dogs, thornies, conger and a spotted ray.

Vicoue sneaked out on 19th for a rare mid week trip and although it was a slow day overall Terry Garrett found a cod of 6lb 9oz.

That has been the sum total of activity since the last report but hopefully over the festive period there will be a few more opportunities to get afloat.

Fish of the month for November sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was a lsd of 2lb 11oz and 90% for Aaron Devey.

The next club competition will be a final attempt at our Thornback Trophy having been cancelled at least twice this year on Thursday 28th December.

The first comp for 2018 is the Presidents cup on Sunday 14th January

Our next club meeting is on Thursday 18th January at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our Facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.

Thornback Trophy Thursday 28th December 2018.

On Thursday 28th December we held the Thornback Trophy out of Burnham-on-Sea, this had been along time coming after being called off 3 times!

This was a shorter comp than normal just 6 hours as we fished over high water.

Another decent turn out with 7 boats and 15 anglers fishing.

The forecast was breezey to start with but the wind was due to die down during the day.

It was a slow run out of the river with some good sized swells slowing us down.

With me on Four Buoys were Fred & Richard Saxby, we decided to find shelter and fished a bank around Hinkley where we joined Chris Lindsay and Dave Teather on Ultra Mover.

Both boats found a good number of rays, congers, whiting and dogfish but sadly no cod.

2 boats braved the swells and fished around Brean Down with Nigel Devey & Andy Georgiou on Ultra White and Martin and John Quinn on Seanie’s Flier.

Conditions were a tad lumpy for them and the fishing was tough there.

Simon Stroud on Ultra Fisher stayed in and around the river with Andy Reeve on board, they had some good rays, doggies and congers.

Alex Wharton on Osprey with Neil Flay stayed in the river and had a very tough day failing to find any fish.

Pete Nicholson on Vicoue with Terry Garrett as crew fished the North Channel and had a good day finding some cod, whiting rays and congers.

At the weigh in there were a few whiting weighed in and Pete had a nice cod of 12lb 2oz that won him the pools on the day.

3 rays were also weighed in, with Pete Nicholson coming third with a 10lb 7oz Thronie for 67%.

Next up was Andy Reeve with a ray of 11lb 10oz for 75% and second place.

First was Simon Stroud with another Thornback ray of 12lb 7oz for 80%.

Again thanks to Tracey for cooking the sausages and roast potatoes and opening the bar.
