News Letter June 2018

By Richard Saxby

The last month has seen an increase in activity with some super weather and boats have taken advantage clocking up some miles steaming as far down as Foreland Point.

The hounds have turned up in the bay now and numbers will increase as we move into summer.

The bass are still showing but not many are targeting them due to the ridiculous ban we are under.

May 20th and 5 boats launched in perfect conditions with all steaming down channel to fish the clearer waters off Porlock and beyond.

Fishing was excellent with dogs, thornies, eels, huss, hounds, bass, tope and a gurnard.

There were a number of double figure huss with the biggest a new club record of 12lb 6oz for Nigel Devey on Ultra White and Aaron Devey also had a bass of 7lb.

May 27th 3 boats with 7 anglers fished the Wilf Dunstone Celebration Bowl in a brisk NE wind restricting our options a little.

The fishing was very busy although most of the fish were under our mls and the hounds were absent until the last minutes of the match when a couple turned up.

All our hounds are measured at sea and returned alive using a formula we have devised to give their weight.

Winner on the day was Nigel Devey with a hound of 13-14 and 90%, second was Anthony Georgiou with a lsd of 2-11/2 and 70% and third was Andy Georgiou with a hound of 10-5 and 66%.

June 3rd and Four Buoys and Seanies Flyer took advantage of a good forecast and again steamed down channel fishing marks from Porlock down to Forland Point.

The weather was fantastic with
mirror seas and sun all day and the fishing was just as hot.

It’s nice to fish in clear water every now and then and catch a few different species like tope and huss.

We do get the odd huss in our local waters but nothing like the numbers we have experienced around Porlock and, apart from the odd Watchet tope, this is another species we have to travel to find.

Tope to upper twenties were landed with Stephen Saxby leading the way with one of 28.5lb on Four Buoys.

Lots of hounds and huss into double figures, codling, bass and the usual suspects gave 8 species caught.

On June 9th we held our first junior comp of the year, a short one over high water.

These are open to
any child as long as they are fishing on a club boat.

The wind on the day was a bit fresher than forecast and restricted where we went but the 5 kids on 4 boats stuck to the task admirably.

The format was single biggest fish with the emphasis on fun so fish were weighed on board and released
at sea.

Judging by the smiles on all their faces when the boats returned the event was a success and
the hot dogs went down at treat back at the clubhouse.

Winner on the day with a fine hound of 13lb was 6 year old Brody McLaughlin, 2nd place was Charlie Willis with a conger of 10-8 and 3rd Ava Saxby with a hound of 10-4.

Fish of the month for May sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Nigel Devey with a huss of 12-6 and 99%.

The club BBQ has been moved to Saturday 28th July, at the sailing club with live music, good food and possibly some alcohol.

The next club competition  an away day comp at West Bay on the 29th July has been cancelled due to the BBQ being moved.

The next club meeting is on Thursday 19th July at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

Summer is almost here and temperatures are at last rising and even the wind has eased a little though not on our competition days!

Increased daylight hours give us small boaters a few more options both from Burnham and other venues.

May 5th  Four Buoys towed down to West Bay for our first away day of the year. With myself, Roy and Stephen Saxby on board.

Although the weather was perfect with blue skies and flat sea there was the start of the May water which did affect fishing.

We managed a couple of pollack and some pout off a wreck and just a single plaice inshore with a few fish dropped.

The following day Ultra White went out of Weymouth with Nigel Devey, Andy and Anthony Georgiou for a day drifting the banks for flats.

They found a good number of turbot  and some cracking plaice off the mussel beds up to around 4lb.

As it was a bank holiday Joe Jeffries took his boat out on the Monday with Chris Lindsay from West Bay.

They found a few pollack and a bass to Chris off a wreck then drifted the mussel beds off Weymouth and Chris had a cracking plaice of 4lb 2oz.

Fish of the month for April sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was again unclaimed as no-one made it out of Burnham.

The next club competition is an away comp against Brixham Sea Angling Club on 3rd June followed by the Top Boat Trophy on the 24th.

We also have our first junior competition of the year on the 9th.

The next club meeting is on Thursday 21st June  at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association.
