The last month has been a bit quiet out from Burnham.

The wind and tides at weekends haven’t helped much but that is something a small boat owner has to work around.

We are still waiting for the first cod from club waters but they can’t be far away now.

There are huge numbers of strap conger out there this year and they will hang around until the water temperature drops.

The whiting are starting to show, hopefully they will be as plentiful as last winter.

On Sunday 21st October 3 boats with 10 members fished the Ray Farthing trophy.

The match started with flat seas but with a forecast indicating that once the tide turned around lunchtime then the wind would move northerly and increase as the afternoon went on.

With this in mind we all steamed down to Watchet looking for an early cod but we drew a blank on that one.

The fishing was steady but finding a fish in size was proving difficult.

As the wind increased Four Buoys moved closer to home trying another couple of marks while Seanies Flyer and Ultra White stuck it out at Watchet.

Back on the beach there were only 4 fish to weigh in with Martin Quinn coming out on top with a spotted ray of 4lb 4oz and 87%.

Second was Aaron Devey with an lsd of 1lb 13oz and 60%.

A whiting of 12oz and 35% was enough for third for James Devey.

November 4th Nigel Devey and Andy Georgiou took Ultra White up to Portishead and both managed to catch their first codling of the season in amongst dogs, straps and thornbacks.

Friday 16th myself, Stephen and Fred Saxby joined a couple of regulars on Mikey Webbers Teddie Boy out of Minehead for a short one over high.

The weather was a bit miserable but it didn’t put the fish off with a total of 7 species caught in just 4 hours.

Best fish fell to Stephen, a blonde of 14-12 but again the cod eluded us.

Fish of the month for October sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Martin Quinn with a spotted ray of 4-4 and 87%.

The next competition is our xmas comp on 9th December with 2 more reserve competitions before the year ends.

The next club meeting is our xmas social on Thursday 20th December at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

The last month hasn’t seen too much action from Burnham but when boats have got out fishing has been very good.

If conditions allow then Porlock has been the favoured area targeting the hounds and tope before they disappear.

Huss and rays add a bit of variety and a there is always a chance of a decent bass.

As autumn moves into winter boats will stay closer to home looking for an early cod with Watchet usually being consistent through November.

Common sense has finally prevailed all be it a bit late and we can now retain one bass a day for the table.

September 29th 2 boats launched on the start of the ebb and steamed down to Porlock bay, Ultra White with Nigel, Aaron and James Devey along with Seanies Flyer with Martin Quinn and Andy Georgiou.

A very busy day for all with some quality fish landed with hounds, huss and rays into double figures and a 26lb tope to James and one of 22lb for Aaron.

Also landed were a thornie of 15-8 for Andy G, a bass of 8-8 for Nigel Devey and a club record tub gurnard of 1-8 for Martin Quinn.

October 7th Ultra White and Seanies Flyer were back out joined by Ultra Fisher with 8 anglers on-board.

They all started off around Watchet and worked their way back to home waters.

Fishing was reasonable with the best fish a thornie of 10-8 to Dave Tether and a huss of 10-0 for Martin Quinn.

Fish of the month for September sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Andy

Georgiou with a thornie of 15-8 and 100%.

The next competition is a cod comp on the 11th November

The next club meeting is our AGM on Thursday 15th November at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

Newsletter September 2018

It’s been a couple of months since my last report, the temperature is starting to drop and the nights are drawing in.

Autumn is definitely on the way and with it will bring a change in species.

Smouthounds have pretty much left the bay now and in the next month hopefully we will see the first of the codling and whiting.

The whiting fishing over the last couple of winters has been fairly good with decent numbers to around 2lb.

Hopefully the cod will be plentiful and come October we may even be able to retain a bass if lucky enough to catch one.

July 22nd Seanies Flyer spent the day at Weymouth with Martin Quinn, Andy Georgiou and Nigel Devey on board.

First fish on board was a cracking brill of 6lb to Nigel.

Other fish caught were plaice, turbot and some decent blondes on the drift over the shambles bank.

August the 5th Seanies Flyer and Ultra White were back down Weymouth.

Fishing was a bit slower than last time with small flats off the bank but Nigel Devey did find a nice double figure undulate ray.

On the same day Lucky Strike launched at Burnham with Craig Willis and Stephen Saxby on board.

They stayed local as it was only a short trip over high water but fishing was busy with plenty of thornies, dogs, eels and a couple of hounds to Stephen the best 17lb.

Mid August and a few members went back to Norway with much better weather than their visit in the spring.

Lots of cod mixed in with coalies and halibut with a couple of pb’s, Martin Quinn with a cod of 50lb and Nigel Devey with a butt of 55lbs.

September 2nd and Four Buoys made it out for the first time in about 6 weeks.

Another short trip with Stephen Saxby, myself and my lad Jack as crew.

Fishing was steady with the usual suspects and Jack came out on top with 11.5 fish (I think his fish counting skills need working on !!).

September 8-9th should have been our 32 hour species comp but with a poor forecast this was cut down to just 9 hours on the Saturday.

Only 2 boats with 5 anglers made it out. With conditions against us our options were limited and this was reflected in the species tally.

On Four Bouys we couldn’t even find a doggie and Sand Piper only had 2 on board all day, very odd.

There was a 3 way tie for first with Steve Winters, Barry Beaton and myself on just 4 species.

September 12th 3 members and a couple of friends had a day out sharking on White Waters inWest Wales.

A great day at sea with 20 blues coming to the boat with 4 over 100lbs with a biggest of 115lbs to me.

Lots of dolphins around the boat and we even had a few tuna busting the surface on the way in.

Fish of the month for July sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Nigel Devey with a brill of 6lb and 120%.

Fish of the month for August went unclaimed.

The next competition is the Tony Holly Trophy on October 7th followed by the Ray Farthing Trophy on the 21st.

The next club meeting is on Thursday 18th October at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.

The weather since my last report has been fantastic with temperatures soaring but for various reasons there hasn’t been to much activity out in the bay.

Smouthounds are still just a few miles from the slipway and hopefully they will hang about for another month or so before they start to drop back down channel.

Once they move off then thoughts of cod won’t be far behind, will they turn up in decent numbers this year?

June 24th and 5 boats launched to fish the Top Boat trophy with 11 anglers onboard.

Most took advantage of the conditions and steamed down channel to Porlock bay.

If the bait went unmolested by doggies for long enough then there was something reasonable waiting to snaffle it.

Fishing was very busy with 4 species of rays, hounds, huss, tope, conger a mackerel and of course the dogs.

Winner on the day was Nigel Devey with a hound of 16lb and 103%, 2nd was Andy Georgiou with  small eyed of 9-1 and 91% and 3rd was Steve Winters with a lsd of 2-9 and 85%.

June 25th and John Chinn and Terry Garrett towed down to Weymouth for a crack at the flatfish.

Fishing was quite tough but they did find a few turbot and a couple of rays with the best fish a blonde ray of 16-7 to John on his plaice rig!!

Fish of the month for June sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Nigel Devey with a hound of 16lb and 103%.

The next competition is our Thornback Trophy on August 26th.

We don’t have a club meeting in August.

The next meeting is on Thursday 20th September at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club.
